Blood Orange, H.E.R., The Internet, Ella Mai

blood-orange.jpg

There is so much new music out this summer it's hard to keep up! This week I've been listening to so much goodness. Blood Orange's new album "Negro Swan" is fantastic; I'm totally feeling the emphasis on self-awareness, which seems relevant for everyone right now. I also love the new album "I Used to Know Her: The Prelude" from H.E.R.— "Lost Souls" with D.J. Scratch is amazing, as is "Against Me" (the instrumentals remind me a lot of 6LACK). Also solid is her track with Bryson Tiller called "Could've Been."

Of course, The Internet's new album "Hive Mind" is just as amazing as their previous. I've had "Hold On" on repeat for the past two weeks— Syd's voice just floats.

If you haven't listened to her yet, Ella Mai is a queen and has had some lovely tracks the past couple of years. Check out "Trip," released earlier this month, or "Boo'd Up," "Naked," and 2016's "She Don't (feat Ty Dolla $Ign)." There's also a fun superbass remix of "Boo'd Up" with Nicki Minaj (yass!) and Quavo

New Tracks from Jhené Aiko, Mura Masa, Silk City, Travis Scott, Nicki Minaj + The Weeknd, Amber Mark + DJDS, ZHU + Majid Jordan

August has so far been solid with new album releases! Some favorite tracks this summer include: throwback 90s vibes from the beautiful Jhené Aiko, Mura Masa, some awesome dance moves from Silk City on Loud (feat. GoldLink & Desiigner), on top of Travis Scott's release of ASTROWORLD and Nicki Minaj (her track feat. The Weeknd is fantastic) are keeping our ears and hearts happy as clams.

P.S. Always and forever a huge fan of Amber Mark— love her on the latest DJDS track, "I Get By."  Check it out here. Also digging the new Zhu + Majid Jordan track "Coming Home."

International Hip Hop: Loyle Carner, Tom Misch and Jorja Smith

Can we talk about Loyle Carner? Carner debuted internationally in January 2017 with the drop of Yesterday's Gone which is AMAZING. His unique voice paired with the hip hop yet funk-feel cadence of tracks carry something to get behind. Check him out with fellow Londoner Tom Misch on the track Water Baby, released 2018.

We're also super excited about English singer-songwriter Jorja Smith, who'll be in CA for Coachella this year and is touring in April with Tom Misch. Find her on Spotify, her sound is soulful and reminiscent of Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys and your gal Amy Winehouse.

HMD Guest Series: Larth Vader "All of the Feels from OVO Sound"

Not sure why, but I've never been a huge fan of Drake (did love him in all-white next to Rihanna, though). In all seriousness, I so respect what he's got going right now with OVO Sound. Solid tracks from Roy Woods and Majid Jordan. We can probably all agree that Get You Good from Roy Woods nailed it in terms of sheet beats, as did his 2016 album Nocturnal. I discovered Majid Jordan in late 2015 and fell in love with the song Her— especially the clip it runs at right after 2:10. If you haven't yet, check out Majid Jordan + dvsn on My Imagination (still obsessing). The Gave Your Love Away video totally embodies what's going on in fashion right now with a hazy 80s vibe.

OVO Sound's collab with Warner Bros., via the launch of dvsn's Sept. 5 in 2016, is wonderful, and I think with that, not to forget having PARTYNEXTDOOR driving parts of the label, is really positioning that whole team on solid footing for the long game.
